Cross-posting this episode to the main Hugos feed. It’s not Hugo-related, but it *is* award related, and I’d be shocked if at least one film on the Oscars list didn’t make it into the Hugo nominees this year.

Let me know if you like this kind of thing being thrown into the feed. I know it’s not typical, but it was fun to do and I hope you enjoy it.

My nephew, Peter Knoch, joins us for another Oscar predictions episode.

We cover all the categories listed on the Oscar page, so here are time codes if you want to skip around:

  1. Yes. I like this being thrown into the feed. I try to watch every Oscar nominated movie. There is a podcast http://www.academyrewind.com where a couple guys watch every best picture nominee year by year and make there picks. They have some wrongheaded choices but it is entertaining.

For 2023 my Best Pictures are ranked ( I haven’t seen Avatar)
    1. Triangle of Sadness- I disagree a bit with you guys, I think its brilliantly structured, its one movie that becomes a different movie.
    2. The Banshees of Inisherin- This is the third time Martin McDonaugh has arguably made the best movie of the year. When I saw it I thought it was the best movie of the 21st century so far, until I saw the above.
    3. Everything Everywhere- its great, parts were a bit silly for me.
    4. All Quiet on the Western Front- a tremendous visual achievement, I appreciated it much more the second time, I watched the dubbed version.
These 4 movies are great, then its a huge comedown.
    5. The Fablemans- I was disappointed, I thought maybe it was too autobiographical, unlike you I thought the teenage Spielberg actor was pretty bland. I would recommend people just watch the last scene of the movie.
    6. Elvis- I watched this first and felt I would not see a worse BP nominee this year, I was wrong. Yes Butler is good and Hanks isn’t, I haven’t liked any Baz film.
    7. TAR- I loved Little Children and In the Bedroom, hated this, a thoroughly unpleasant character who was never off-screen. The Ghost theory doesn’t make it any better for me.
    8. Woman Talking- yes exactly, just talk and talk. I liked Polly’s other films but this was a complete failure, I didn’t know what was going on. By the way I think I have a problem with most 90 minute Best Picture nominees, often they seem too slight to me, for example, the overrated Belfast is really 80 minutes with some padded scenes of the kid watching movies in a theatre. There are exceptions but its a trend I’ve noticed.
    9. Top Gun: Maverick- I’m sorry I hated it, its so formulaic it could have been written by a computer program. The stuff between Cruise and Miles Teller (“you just weren’t ready”). Why was the villain unnamed? Was it Russians? The Taliban? Its like they didn’t want to offend anyone. A movie like this has to have an interesting villain. What if Die Hard didn’t have Alan Rickman?

Best Actor- haven’t seen Aftersun or Living. The other 3 1. Colin Ferrell 2. Brendan Fraser- he was better than the movie 3. Austin Butler.

Actress- 1. Michelle Yeoh- weak category, but I liked her the best. 2. Blanchett- a great actress who deserved her win for Blue Jasmine and should have won for Notes on a Scandal, but I could not relate to her character. 3. Michelle Williams- she was ok but too weird. 4. De Armas- Blonde was terrible it bothered me that she did not physically resemble MM enough. Did not see To Leslie.

Supporting Actor- 1. Gleason 2. Keogen. 3. Kwan 4. Hirsch did not see Casueway. Its between the two Banshees. Gleason had a more substantial role.

Supporting Actress- they really got this one wrong. 1. Condon 2. Hsu 3. Chau 4. Curtis. 5. Bassett. Condon no contest although Hsu is great, I admit I find her quite fetching. Chau was better in Downsized and yes The Menu. Curtis was no where near as good as Hsu but I’m glad Bassett didn’t win for this, didn’t care for the movie.

Director- Triangle of Sadness over Banshees. 3. Everything 4. Fablemans 5. TAR

Original screenplay- Banshees slightly over Triangle- it has that brilliant McDonaugh dialog.
Adapted- yes Glass Onion is original but I haven’t seen Living (Ikiru is great), All Quiet my runner up is more of a director’s movie, hated the other 2 nominees.
Cinematography- All Quiet. Yes Bardo was weird, Empire of Light just ok would not have been nominated if Deakins wasn’t attached to it. Banshees would have been a good replacement.
    Score- All quiet over Babylon
    Sound- All quiet
    Art Direction- Babylon
    Editing- Everything Everywhere
Effects- yes Avatar, All quiet runner up or Batman
Makeup- The Whale runner up Batman.
Song-RRR. Wish they would get rid of the category.
Costumes- I really liked Mrs. Harris!
Doc. Feature- only saw Fire of Love- great visuals, couldn’t take Miranda July’s raspy narration.
Animated feature- The Sea Monster- surprisingly to me! Turning Red was ok, 3rd Pinocchio this disappointed me. 4. Didn’t care for Puss in Boots. Didn’t see Marcel the Shell.
Animated short- Ice Merchants! The image of the tear forming on the little kid when he thinks he’s jumping to his death is one I will never forget. 2. An Ostrich told Me. Didn’t like the Dicks one, haven’t Seen The Boy, The Mole. Flying Sailor just ok
Doc. Short- I liked the Martha Mitchell one the best, all were good, haven’t seen How do you measure a year although the director’s nominated short about Bullies should have won last year.
Fiction Short- only saw Le Pupil and Night Ride- prefered Night Ride.
Foreign Film-only saw All Quiet, EO is a remake of my all time favorite film Au Hasard Balthazar.

Snubs- The Menu- got a deserved WGA nod. Armageddon Time deserved an original screenplay nomination. Till deserved a Best Actress nomination, I really liked a couple of horror movies- Smile and Men.

    1. Glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for sharing your picks! Triangle of Sadness is one that still keeps creeping around in my head, which I think makes it more effective than I probably gave it credit for.

      1. Thanks for repsonding. I forgot to mention I really enjoyed White Noise on Netflix, deserved an Adapted Screenplay nod. Also Nope didn’t work for me except for the homicidal chimp.

  3. I quite liked Living and Bill Nighy, I would put him in 4th place. Plot-wise it’s very similar to Ikiru. Glass Onion gets my adapted screenplay award.
