I met Larry Niven once, at a convention. He talked about what you mentioned at 17 minutes, that he created these worlds for other people to play in. And then he grumbled for a while that people totally misunderstood what he meant and tried to publish stories in his universe without his permission. He definitely would *not* be cool with people making a TV show or movie based on his work. Not without his permission and compensation anyway. He was also highly critical of some of the *solicited* submissions he received for stories set in the human-Kzin wars, calling them *unpublishable*.
Any TV or movie adaptation should absolutely compensate him. I’d be curious to see an adaptation.
