Corrections to what I said:
1) For comps, I recommend Jo Graham’s *Black Ships*, the book about the Trojan priestess. Here’s my review: https://www.librarything.com/work/3285441/reviews/26550468 … I mistakenly mentioned another book of hers, *Lost Ships* (not Lost Souls, either) which is the start of her great series about 20th century veteran pilots and their friends, also dealing with magical challenges but not as comparable to *Paladin of Souls*.
2) I got the Jokonans and the Roknari mixed up. Jokona is one princedom among the Roknari people/region.
